Why These Issues Matter

A healthy environment is not a reward for living in the right zip code. It is a right, and EcoJustice is the work of making it one in practice. EWISE advocates for clean air and water, and for people to have real standing in the decisions that shape the environment where they live.

In Georgia, some of those decisions run through the Public Service Commission, five people who regulate the state's utilities.

Energy is not an abstraction. It is a line in a household budget. For many families it is one of the largest lines. Energy Democracy means the people paying those bills have real standing in where power comes from and what it costs.

The Public Service Commission sets the rates most Georgians pay for electricity and gas. Commissioners live in the district they represent, but every Georgia voter votes on every seat. Two are on this ballot — Districts 3 and 5. You do not have to live in either district to vote in both races.

Land is the foundation of everything EWISE does. Black farmers have lost the overwhelming majority of their land over the last century, and the work of getting it back runs through who has the power to open doors — or keep them closed.

Agriculture is Georgia's largest industry. The Commissioner of Agriculture leads the department that enforces food safety, markets Georgia crops, and shapes how state programs reach the people working the land.
